How often you can fast charge

Genuinely contested. Two large datasets disagree

Anyone who tells you this question is settled has not read both studies.

At a glance

  • Verdict. Genuinely contested. Two large datasets disagree
  • Evidence. Two large observational studies with opposite findings
  • Applies to. Any lithium pack unless the page says otherwise
  • Cost to follow it. Nothing

The detail

Recurrent looked at 13,000 Teslas across 160,000 data points and found no statistically significant difference between cars fast charged more than 70 percent of the time and cars fast charged less than 30 percent of the time. Geotab's 2026 data found the opposite, with drivers who mostly used chargers above 100 kW degrading at up to 3.0 percent a year against roughly 1.5 percent for low power users. The likely reconciliation is that power level and the quality of the car's thermal management matter, rather than fast charging in itself. Both studies are correlational.
