Battery recalls

Check the campaign,
not the tick

A clean recall lookup is not proof. Three of these campaigns replaced an earlier one, so a car showing the old recall as completed can still need the new remedy.

At a glance

  • Chevrolet Bolt ran three campaigns and the first was software that did not fix it
  • Hyundai and Kia's famous fault is not the traction battery at all
  • A live 2026 campaign on the IONIQ 5, EV6 and EV9 replaces the whole pack
  • Tesla has no traction battery recall, which surprises people

The superseded three

  • Chevrolet Bolt. 20V-701 was superseded by 21V-560
  • Ford Mustang Mach-E. 22V-412 was superseded by 23V-687
  • Hyundai and Kia. 24V-204 was superseded by 24V-868, and 24V-200 by 24V-867

Check the campaign numbers themselves rather than trusting a green tick on a VIN report.

Questions people actually ask

Does a clean VIN recall lookup mean the car is fine
Not always. Three battery campaigns in this set superseded an earlier one, so a car showing the old recall as completed may still need the newer remedy. Check the campaign numbers themselves.
Did every Chevrolet Bolt get a new battery pack
No. The federal remedy text says modules. Some cars got a full pack, many got module sets, and some got software plus a clean diagnostic result.

Buying a Used EV or Hybrid?

Get the battery measured before you pay for it. A PPI Auto inspector tests the pack on the car you are looking at and sends you the numbers. Starting at $225.
