Battery recalls

Hyundai, Kia and Genesis
IONIQ 5 and 6, EV6, GV60, Electrified GV70 and G80

The famous Hyundai and Kia fault is not a traction battery problem at all. It is the converter that keeps the twelve volt battery alive.

What was actually done

NHTSA files this under the twelve volt battery category, not the high voltage battery. The unit converts high voltage down to twelve volts. When it fails it stops charging the small battery, and the car then loses drive power, usually with a warning and then a shutdown. The main pack is fine. The fix is hardware plus software, not software alone.

If you are buying one

Not confirmed. Goodwill or warranty extension programs on this unit are widely discussed and no primary document was found.

Buying a Used EV or Hybrid?

Get the battery measured before you pay for it. A PPI Auto inspector tests the pack on the car you are looking at and sends you the numbers. Starting at $225.
