Hybrid Battery Test

The mainstream Western chemistry, and the digits in 811 or 622 are a recipe, not a rating.

At a glance

  • Energy density. high, and rising as the nickel share rises
  • Found in. GM Ultium, Volkswagen MEB, Hyundai and Kia E-GMP, BMW, Ford Extended Range
  • Life. Comparable to NCA in fleet data.
  • Weakness. Standard lithium ion behavior. Heat and high state of charge together are what age it.

Where you will find it

GM Ultium, Volkswagen MEB, Hyundai and Kia E-GMP, BMW, Ford Extended Range.

What is good about it

A good balance of energy, power and cost, which is why most non Tesla Western electric cars use it.

What is not

More nickel buys density and cuts cobalt cost, and also cuts thermal and structural stability. That is why 811 arrived later and with a more conservative battery management system around it.

How long it lasts

Comparable to NCA in fleet data.

Heat and cold

Standard lithium ion behavior. Heat and high state of charge together are what age it.

What it means for you

The ratio is a spec sheet fact, not a maintenance one. Nothing you do differently depends on whether your car has 622 or 811.

Buying a Used EV or Hybrid?

Get the battery measured before you pay for it. A PPI Auto inspector tests the pack on the car you are looking at and sends you the numbers. Starting at $225.
