Replacement cost

The bill most
people never get

Most owners never pay this bill. Recurrent puts the out of warranty replacement rate across its community at 2.5 percent.

At a glance

  • Dealer prices have not tracked cell prices. Cells fell from over 400 dollars a kilowatt hour to around 111. Pack quotes did not
  • Third party and refurbished packs often cost half the dealer figure
  • The exposure is concentrated in first generation cars now twelve to fourteen years old
  • These figures predate 2026 and are the shape of the problem rather than today's quote

Why the two numbers diverged

Cell prices fell from more than 400 dollars per kilowatt hour in 2012 to roughly 111 dollars globally in 2024, with Chinese iron phosphate cells near 56. Dealer pack prices have not followed that fall anywhere near as fast. The owners who do face a replacement are mostly in first generation cars now twelve to fourteen years old.

Buying a Used EV or Hybrid?

Get the battery measured before you pay for it. A PPI Auto inspector tests the pack on the car you are looking at and sends you the numbers. Starting at $225.
