Hybrid packs
It is usually
one bad module
A hybrid pack does not fade evenly. It usually fails as one weak module, which is why a whole pack is often the wrong purchase.
At a glance
- P0A80 reads as replace the pack and actually means one weak cell block
- Test the twelve volt battery first. It is the most common false alarm in hybrid ownership
- Remanufactured is not the same product as rebuilt, even when the words look alike
- Toyota covers the hybrid battery for 10 years or 150,000 miles from model year 2020

Why they fail this way
Hybrid packs are cycled differently from electric car packs. Small, constant, high rate partial cycles in a narrow band of state of charge, in a fan cooled box, for the life of the car.
What you will notice, in order
- The state of charge gauge swinging quickly between full and empty
- The engine running when it used to stay off
- Fuel economy dropping five to fifteen miles per gallon
- Weak or absent electric assist
- Finally the check engine light and the red triangle, with code P0A80
P0A80 reads as Replace Hybrid Battery Pack. It specifically means the battery management system has found a weak cell block. It does not mean every module is finished.
The mistake that costs people three thousand dollars
A hybrid with a dead twelve volt battery presents as a car that will not start, with a dashboard full of warnings including hybrid system faults. This is the most common false alarm in hybrid ownership. It costs 150 to 300 dollars to fix rather than 3,000. Test the twelve volt before authorizing any work on the main pack.
What replacement actually costs
- New from the dealer
- roughly $3,500 to $5,000 installed for a PriusThe default quote, and often not the right answer.
- Remanufactured
- roughly $1,250 to $2,250The pack is disassembled, every module tested and matched, weak ones replaced, and the management system recalibrated.
- Reconditioned or rebuilt
- cheapest, and shortest livedOften only the failed modules are swapped. Typically three to five years against eight to ten for a new pack. This is not the same product as a remanufactured pack even when it is sold under similar words.
Toyota covers the hybrid battery for 10 years or 150,000 miles from model year 2020, and a full electric battery for 8 years or 100,000 miles with a floor of 70 percent of original capacity.
Questions people actually ask
My hybrid says replace the battery pack. Do I need a whole pack
Why does my hybrid say the battery is dead when it was fine yesterday
The Kind of Tech We Send
Meet Matthew Bolen of Wrench Services in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.
Matt has worked on engines since he was seven or eight. He learned from his dad, and from a brother who is a heavy diesel tech. He passed his Advanced Level Certification in Nevada in 2007 and became a G2 emission testing tech.
He carries scan tools, an oscilloscope, a hybrid battery tester and meters. He is also the first to say the tools are not the point. Reading the numbers right is.
Don't sell someone a $3,500 battery unless it needs it.
That is the rule a battery test is for. A pack with one weak module often needs that module, not a whole new pack. Matt will tell you which one you are looking at.
His Record
- EV and Hybrid credential on MechanicRank, scored 100 percent
- Advanced Level Certification, Nevada, 2007
- G2 emission testing tech
- Covers Rio Rancho and the surrounding area
And in Michigan, Ron at Manko
In Westland, the tech is Rani Taki, who goes by Ron. He owns Manko Mobile Automotive.
Ron has ten years in the trade. He spent two years at Ford as a diagnostic and drivability technician and a year on the road as a race mechanic. For the last six he has run his own mobile repair business across Wayne County.
Pre purchase inspections are one of his specialties. Electronic diagnostics are the other. A battery test needs both, a scan tool read the right way and a straight answer on what the car is worth.
His Record
- Ford diagnostic and drivability tech, two years
- Ten years in the trade, six of them mobile
- Pre purchase inspections and electronic diagnostics
- Covers Westland, Dearborn, Livonia, Canton and the rest of Wayne County
Who comes out depends on where the car is parked. Matt and Ron are the standard we hold every tech to.

Buying a Used EV or Hybrid?
Get the battery measured before you pay for it. A PPI Auto inspector tests the pack on the car you are looking at and sends you the numbers. Starting at $225.
