The chemistry in almost every older hybrid, and it lasts far longer than its reputation suggests, as long as it stays cool.

At a glance

  • Energy density. roughly 60 to 80 Wh per kg
  • Found in. Prius generations one to four, Honda Insight and Civic Hybrid, Ford Escape Hybrid, Lexus RX400h, Camry Hybrid
  • Life. Roughly 8 to 12 years or 100,000 to 200,000 miles in practice.
  • Weakness. Heat is the dominant killer. A Phoenix or Houston Prius fails earlier than a Seattle one. Cold cuts available assist but does not shorten the pack's life.

Where you will find it

Prius generations one to four, Honda Insight and Civic Hybrid, Ford Escape Hybrid, Lexus RX400h, Camry Hybrid.

What is good about it

Flat discharge curve, high pulse rate, wide abuse tolerance. Exactly what a hybrid needs, which is why it stayed in production so long.

What is not

Low energy density, real self discharge, and thermal sensitivity. The pack is cooled by cabin air through a vent that owners block with luggage.

How long it lasts

Roughly 8 to 12 years or 100,000 to 200,000 miles in practice.

Heat and cold

Heat is the dominant killer. A Phoenix or Houston Prius fails earlier than a Seattle one. Cold cuts available assist but does not shorten the pack's life.

Buying a Used EV or Hybrid?

Get the battery measured before you pay for it. A PPI Auto inspector tests the pack on the car you are looking at and sends you the numbers. Starting at $225.
