What Goes Wrong
Reported failures, each from a source listed below, as of October 7, 2026.
- Owner complaints NHTSA lists under the Hybrid Propulsion System component for the Chevrolet Volt, by model year: 2017: 4. These are all hybrid system complaints, owner reported and unverified, not only battery faults, as of 2026-10-07.
- GM Customer Satisfaction Program N202307990 (about 67,415 US 2016-2018 Volts) says the high-voltage battery could gradually lose the ability to maintain voltage, leading to reduced propulsion, loss of propulsion or a no-start; dealers update HPCM2 software. (static.nhtsa.gov: MC-10207742-9999.pdf, 2026-10-07)
- GM Special Coverage N232432680 (about 19,000 US 2016-2018 Volts) describes a battery energy control module malfunction inside the pack that can cause reduced power, no start or no charge, and extends BECM coverage to 15 years/150,000 miles. (static.nhtsa.gov: MC-10251431-0001.pdf, 2026-10-07)
- GM bulletin 21-NA-204 (2016-2019 Volt) describes brief 'Speed Limited' or 'Reduced Propulsion Power' messages with no DTCs, attributed to low drive-unit fluid or a mismatch in estimated pack capacity due to charging habits. (static.nhtsa.gov: MC-10245198-0001.pdf, 2026-10-07)
Symptoms
- 'Reduced Propulsion Power' or 'Speed Limited to X mph' message (GM bulletin 21-NA-204; CSP N202307990). (static.nhtsa.gov: MC-10245198-0001.pdf, 2026-10-07)
- Vehicle may not start (CSP N202307990; Special Coverage N232432680). (static.nhtsa.gov: MC-10207742-9999.pdf, 2026-10-07)
- No-charge condition (Special Coverage N232432680). (static.nhtsa.gov: MC-10251431-0001.pdf, 2026-10-07)
- Loss of propulsion while driving (CSP N202307990). (static.nhtsa.gov: MC-10207742-9999.pdf, 2026-10-07)
Warranty
Chevrolet's 2016 and 2018 Limited Warranty and Owner Assistance booklets cover the Volt's electric propulsion components, including the high-voltage propulsion battery, for 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first; the 2018 booklet adds that hybrid batteries on California TZEV-certified (NU6) vehicles registered in a TZEV state are covered for 10 years or 150,000 miles.
