What Goes Wrong
Reported failures, each from a source listed below, as of October 7, 2026.
- Owner complaints NHTSA lists under the Hybrid Propulsion System component for the Toyota Prius, by model year: 2016: 2 · 2022: 1. These are all hybrid system complaints, owner reported and unverified, not only battery faults, as of 2026-10-07.
Symptoms
- Toyota service bulletin T-SB-0074-20 (Aug 2020) describes the check engine light (MIL) coming on with DTC P0A80 and/or P0A7F stored because dust or debris has built up in the HV battery cooling fan or intake filter; the procedure cleans the fan and cleans or replaces the intake filter. It lists 2003-2020 Prius, so it covers 2016-2020 of this record. (static.nhtsa.gov: MC-10179698-9999.pdf, 2026-10-07)
- The 2019 Prius owner's manual says the hybrid battery air intake vent is under the right side of the rear seat; if the vent is blocked, charging and discharging of the hybrid battery may become limited, and it should be vacuumed when dust builds up. (assets.sia.toyota.com: OM47E09U.pdf, 2026-10-07)
- The 2019 Prius owner's manual says that if the message 'Maintenance required for Traction battery cooling parts' appears, the air intake vent should be cleaned right away, because continued driving with the message shown may lead to a hybrid battery malfunction. (assets.sia.toyota.com: OM47E09U.pdf, 2026-10-07)
- Toyota's 2020 Prius Warranty and Maintenance Guide schedules cleaning of the HV battery cooling intake filter and refers to the owner's manual section on cleaning the hybrid battery air intake vent and filter. (techinfo.toyota.com: T-MMS-20Prius.pdf, 2026-10-07)
Same Electrical Spec
These packs share this one's chemistry, voltage and module count. That is a spec match only. It does not mean the parts fit each other, so check with a technician.
Recalls
- 17V658000 2016 A capacitor in the hybrid system may not have been bolted properly to the inverter housing.
- 18V579000 2016-2018 Part of the engine wire harness at the hybrid Power Control Unit may rub against the cover and short circuit.
- 21V734000 2022 Engine control software may wrongly detect an error and shut the hybrid system down, causing a loss of drive power.

Warranty
Toyota's 2017-2019 Prius Warranty and Maintenance Guides list the hybrid battery under the 8-year/100,000-mile Hybrid System Warranty (10 years/150,000 miles for California-certified vehicles in the listed states), and the 2020 and 2022 guides list a separate Hybrid Battery Warranty of 10 years or 150,000 miles from the in-service date.
